Pangalanes Canal or Canal des Pangalanes history and building

The Pangalanes canal.

Geographically, the eastern part of Madagascar is made up of cliffs, it is the humid part of Madagascar which knows the highest rainfall. Indeed, it is the place where tropical forests, secondary forests and primary forests of Madagascar are concentrated. The waters of the watercourse streams have met below the cliffs of eastern Madagascar to form rivers, lakes and ponds from the top of Tamatave or toamasina in the north and Farafangana in the south.

Given the wealth of raw materials and export products in the eastern part of the big island such as sugar cane, coffee, cloves, vanilla, ylang-ylang… Indian, Portuguese, French and English ships recognized the region of the east coast of Madagascar. At that time, Tamatave was a trading post and later Foulpointe or Mahavelona became the center of French business.

At the beginning of the 19th century, in 1815 King Radama 1st was the first to take the initiative to initiate the connection of these eastern rivers, lakes and ponds to form the Canal des Pangalanes, but the king had no good results because they were still occupied by the invasion of the English and French. Years passed, treaties were put in place and subsequently violated. And towards the end of the 19th century, the big island of Madagascar was declared and finally became a French protectorate. Two years later, General Joseph Gallieni called for the resumption of work aimed at controlling the east coast in the administrative and military domain. Thus, the Pangalanes Channel and Railway project were relaunched in 1905.

The beginning of the Canal des Pangalanes drill was in 1905 and was not completed until 1989. The creation of the Pangalanes Canal was quite a long period of work and around 700 km, a waterway canal of 665 km from Foulpointe to Farafangana had been accomplished.

-1907: Opening of part of a waterway between the town of Mananjary and Vatomandry.
-1907 to 1908: Works on the Pangalanes Canal linking Marokontsy Lake and Salakotaka Lake. Then, call for the Pangalanes Canal project between Ifontsy and Ivoloina.
-1908 to 1923: Construction works of the connecting canals of Antsiramianina Ambinavolo and Vatomandry.
-1910: Connection of the Pangalanes Canal from Farafangana to Vohipeno.

Leave Diégo towards the three bays of Diégo Suarez. These bays will offer you splendid landscapes. Take a walk lasting 2 to 2.5 hours along the coast, starting with the Sakalava Bay, then passing through the Baie des Pigeons, and finally, the short coastal hike ends at the Dunes Bay. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to discover the largest baobab and small baobabs, mainly found in the northern region of Madagascar. D4: Diégo Suarez / Mahamasina (142KMS) 3h

Start the day by taking the road toward Ankarana National Park. Pass by Amber Mountain National Park located in the south-west of Diégo Suarez, The NP of Amber Mountain is one of the region’s natural gems. In stark contrast to the surrounding dry landscapes, the massif offers a lush, cool and humid environment, typical of true tropical rainforest. Then Red Tsingy, located 17 kilometers from the national road. Continue towards Mahamasina where the Tsingy of Ankarana or Ankarana National Park is located.

D5: Visite of the National Park of Ankarana

Guided tour in Ankarana National Park and unveil the mesmerizing Tsingy of Ankarana a collection of limestone rock formations resembling intricate cathedrals. Embark on a 5/6-hour hike, tailored to your performance level, to fully appreciate the unique natural wonders within the park.

Early departure to catch the boat transfer before noon.

Going towards Ankify which is the place where you will take the boat to Nosy Be, pass through green landscapes scented by plantations of aromatic vegetation.

Transfer to the hotel

Then have a visit to Lemuria Land Park that is a park of lemurs with about ten species and many other fauna such as reptiles. Do have a good time to enjoy sunset in Mont Passot.

On the way by boat towards Nosy Komba or lemur island, take a tour of the village along small paths decorated with mats and artisanal embroideries. Then, a sports stop awaits you in search of lemurs in the mountain of Nosy Komba. After that, swimming and exploring in Nosy Tanikely 8.5 km southwest of Nosy Be. Guided tour of the Nosy Tanikely Marine National Park and take a walk to the lighthouse at an altitude of 40m.

Travel conditions in Madagascar and reopening of boarders

TRAVEL CONDITIONS IN MADAGASCAR AND REOPENING OF BOARDERS

After a long lockdown period between countries due to the covid-19 pandemic or coronavirus, many are thirsty to travel and discover Madagascar.

UD April 10, 2022

According to the last Council of Ministers, from the date of April 9, 2022, five Madagascar airports can be in service and welcome international and regional flights.

Tananarive or Antananarivo airport (TNR),

Hell Ville or Nosy Be Airport (NOS),

Majunga or Mahajanga Airport (MJN),

Tamatave or Toamasina airport (TMM) and

Diégo Suarez or Antsiranana airport (DIE).

In this case, the Madagascar airline and six other airlines including Air France, Air Mauritius, Air Austral, Ewa Air, Neos, Ethiopian Airlines are authorized to operate flights so far to Madagascar and from Madagascar.

The Council of Ministers of March 30, 2022 took new measures relating to the health conditions of travel to Madagascar from the previous Council of Ministers of March 5, 2022. This is done not only to accelerate trade from to one country to another but also above all to strengthen the health barrier against COVID-19.

With several ongoing collaborations, the Malagasy authority now aims to increase the frequency of international flights and reduce the prices of plane tickets to and from Madagascar.

Mandatory confinement on arrival at Madagascar airport has been suspended

The passenger must show a negative result of a PCR test before boarding

The passenger must perform an antigen test upon arrival at the airport

The passenger is free and can immediately travel in the event of a negative result

The passenger will be placed in an approved establishment or hotel for 7-day confinement

Resumption of flights joining Reunion/Antananarivo, Reunion/Toamasina and Reunion/Nosy Be

Resumption of flights connecting Mayotte/Antananarivo, Mayotte/Mahajanga and Mayotte/Nosy Be/Antsiranana,

UD March 6, 2022

The total reopening of the Malagasy borders in the face of covid-19 and the global health situation, the interdepartmental council affirms that for the moment, only three airports of madagascar can receive commercial flights including Antananarivo airport, Toamasina airport and the Nosy Be airport. The landing conditions on the borders of Madagascar are put in place through meetings, studies and council of Ministers.

TRAVEL CONDITIONS

Negative result of an Rt-PCR test

Passenger must present a negative result of an Rt-PCR test carried out 72 hours before boarding.

Rt-PCR test on arrival

The passenger is obliged to carry out an Rt-PCR test on arrival at Madagascar airport, the procedures will be at the expense of the traveler (23€) but the airline companies have the project to include these charges in the plane ticket.

Lockdown Commitment Letter

While waiting for the result of the Rt-PCR test, the traveler must present the confinement commitment letter.

The traveler will be confined for 14 days in a receptive hotel establishment at his expense.

Reservation certificate for 2 nights

The traveler must present a reservation certificate for 2 nights for confinement and a payment invoice for a hotel room for at least 1 night.

APT/HTL transfers

The incoming hotel, the Ministry of Transport, approved taxis organize themselves and offer Airport/Hotel transfer services by shuttle or others. The transfer will be the responsibility of the traveler.

Completion of a follow-up and travel form

The traveler will fill out a follow-up and travel form after confinement.
